Stratigraphy
Stratigraphic examinations involve the removal of a tiny sample of color which is incorporated into a hard resin, cut and smoothed for examination of its section under a microscope.
The technique allows the identification of the layers of which a painting is made and their relative thickness, so as to allow multiple observations on the characteristics of the various layers and therefore on the technique of execution and on the materials used.
